One more important bit of information inside the numbers of the CBS News/New York Times survey released late last night: the volatility of the race: "Roughly twenty percent of both McCain and Obama supporters say they have not yet settled definitively on their chosen candidate." The next significant opportunity to bring some stability to the numbers (save a major league gaffe): the debates.
